The most common of our native orchids. It grows in full sun. It will tolerate damp soils or any well drained neutral soil, but not a very dry or acidic soil.
You can put it in a flower bed or into grass which is managed as a wildflower meadow. This can be an area of lawn or other grassland but must contain fine meadow grasses and yellow rattle to keep the grass from dominating and overwhelming the orchids and other flowering plants. Please see our notes on meadow creation and management.
Orchids will spread and grow from seed only if the species-specific soil fungi are present. For the Common spotted orchid we believe that these are often present in the soil. Any self-seeded plants will take 4-5 years to grow from seed to flowering. Common spotted orchid will also divide itself and form a small clump, if it is not too crowded by surrounding plants.
