It’s the time of year when Marsh marigolds can be found growing at the waters edge of ponds, lakes and marshland.
The brilliant yellow flowers stand out in the shallows, where they attract pollinators- bees in particular.
Marsh marigold is a great choice for a damp or boggy area in the garden, especially in part shade where they will bring the area to life. Around a garden pond it can be planted as a pond edge plant in wet soils or as a marginal and blends well with other pond edge plants such as Ragged Robin, Water avens, Hemp agrimony and Cuckoo flower. Planting around a waters edge is a great way to encourage insects and pond life and help the biodiversity of the pond to develop.

This wonderful wildflower patch, buzzing with insects was created by a customer last spring by planting a selection of our wildflower pots.
Easy to plant and easy to grow, our plants have well developed root systems so they establish easily once planted and will often flower in the first year.
This customer planted a small patch on the edge of her lawn, and has just popped back for some more plants to add.
Starting with a small selection is a great way to begin your wildflower patch and planting native perennials is a sustainable way forward as they return each year - great for the environment and wildlife too.

The frothy white heads of Cow parsley are just starting to pop up along the hedgerows. The small white flowers that make up the umbrella like heads are so delicate that no wonder it’s also called Lady’s Lace.
It’s one of the earliest umbellifers whose flat heads are ideal landing platforms for a range of insects including bees, hoverflies, moths and butterflies.
Allowing some native Cow parsley to grow in a partly shady area in a garden or hedgerow will add hints of white and it is sure to increase the local biodiversity too.

Swathes of Bugle have now appeared with Cuckoo flower springing up too.
A ‘no mow and let it grow’ approach in some areas can certainly provide some wildflower surprises, in addition to benefiting the local wildlife.
