This is our native hop, which is a vigorous climber and a great addition to a native hedgerow.
The male and female flowers are on separate plants so there is no guarantee which you will get as ours are grown from seed. Male flowers grow in a loose branching group, whereas female flowers are catkins, shaped like a cone.
Other features:
The female flower develops into the fruit which is cone shaped and brown when it has ripened.
Wildlife attracted:
As a climbing plant, the hop helps create a dense leafy habitat. A small microclimate is created in the hedge, providing an ideal habitat for insects or nesting birds. The flowers are also a nectar source for insects.
