The Martagon lily is not strictly native but widely naturalised in our woodlands. It is a stunning plant, usually pink but occasionally white. It adds an exotic splash to a partly shaded border or when planted with other woodland wildflowers especially under deciduous trees. However it does prefer a well drained soil. An added bonus is that it self seeds by wind dispersal and will colonise the nearby area.
One of the first lilies grown in English gardens during the 16th century. The Martagon lily is also called Turks cap lily.
The bright flowers are attractive to pollinators during mid Summer.
