Yellow rattle is a semi parasitic plant, it attaches to the roots of grasses and steals their nutrients. The grasses therefore grow shorter and less thickly, allowing the meadow flowers to thrive with less competition. Essential to a meadow on fairly fertile soil. We grow it in pots and plugs along with a grass host plant (it won’t grow on its own). Please don’t pull out the grass thinking it’s a weed (people do). It is an annual so only available from March to July. Our meadow mix is rich in rattle seed and should be sown in autumn to allow the winter cold to help the rattle germinate.
