The bright yellow Rough Hawkbit flowers in a meado The bright yellow Rough Hawkbit flowers in a meadow may easily be mistaken as Dandelion flowers.
Rough hawkbit IS in the same family and shares several characteristics with Dandelions but there are some differences too! If you love a dandelion flower then you’ll love the Rough hawkbit and it’s loved by pollinators too.
Each flower is carried on a single stem and once finished becomes a fluffy seed head - swipe to see - so if you wish to save the seed catch it while you can . Otherwise the seeds will quickly disperse by wind to find a nearby patch to germinate for the following year.
Rough hawkbit is a meadow plant of unimproved alkaline grassland, flowering from June - September and in a garden could be added to a well drained grassed area or mini meadow in full sun. The deep roots help each plant to obtain nutrients and water even in the driest conditions.
If you keep a Tortoise this is a great foraging food for your Tortoise to munch 🐢
