We love exploring container growing with wildflowers. Here we have combined wildflowers with a selection of herbaceous perennials and an ornamental grass too.
Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) and Maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides) are spilling over the top to soften the edges. The centre is planted with Water avens, (Geum rivale) Scabiosa ‘Kudo Pink’ , Allium ‘Millenium’ and Calamagrostis ‘Overdam’ .
Easy to plant and easy to maintain too! The plants are perennials so will return next year and any gaps over winter can be filled by popping in a few spring flowering bulbs 😀

Meadowsweet is having a great year here in Somerset!
The wet weather in recent months has really suited the damp habitat which Meadowsweet loves.
It’s thriving in the roadside ditches beneath the hedgerows where the soil retains moisture in the part shade.
The fluffy creamy-white flowers have a sweet fragrance and will attract plenty of insects. But also importantly it is the food plant for the larvae of some moths too.
It’s a super wildflower to populate those tricky, damp spots in the garden. Plant alongside Ragged Robin and lower growing moisture loving wildflowers such as Bugle, Great Burnet or Water avens and any damp area will soon become a wildlife heaven.
If you’re a creative chef there are culinary recipes or even apothecary recipes that use the leaves, flowers or roots too!

Two of the lesser known Campions, now in flower ar

Two of the lesser known Campions, now in flower are Bladder campion and White campion.
Both have white flowers but they look very different in flower shape, leaf shape and growth so can easily be identified.
Their habitat is different too ; Bladder campion in nature is found on short grassland and meadows, It’s low growing & sprawling with thick grey- green leaves so it can survive dry, windswept conditions. It grows well on chalk and well drained soil and is a favourite flower for summer flying insects.
White campion is much taller upto 50cm and is found in hedgerows or roadside verges. In appearance it is a white version of the common Red campion, however it is usually a biennial so flowers in the second year. It attracts pollinators during the day but also night time moths, so is great for a wildlife border.

Purple loosestrife for pond edge, stream and river bank or wetland.
A vigourous native which flowers through the summer and is an important food source for pollinators including the Brimstone butterfly. With its tall purple flower spikes and long flowering season it will attract bees, butterflies and hoverflies until early autumn.

The hedgerows are coming up roses! It’s the time of year when native roses are at their best
From the pale pink Dog rose with its delicate scent; to Field rose - creamy white and scrambling through the hedgerow; to Sweet briar -strongly scented with a darker pink flower and apple scented leaves!
Any of this native trio are perfect to grow in a deciduous hedge for mid summer colour followed by the bright rose hips in autumn.
The rose hip seeds are also an important autumn food source for Blackbirds, Fieldfares,Thrushes and small mammals too. 🙌
