Description
Wild cherry is a native deciduous tree and is the wild relative of many cultivated cherry trees
It is a lovely native tree which has interest for the wildlife garden for much of the year. In Spring beautiful clusters of pure white blossom during April, followed by deep red fruits which appear later in the year. In Autumn the tree displays fabulous Autumn colour as the oval leaves turn to red and gold.
It prefers a location in full sun, in a fertile soil.
Wildlife attracted:
The Wild cherry has many benefits to wildlife. In April the blossom attracts pollinators and the leaves are a larval food source for the caterpillars of several moths including the cherry fruit and cherry bark moths, the orchard ermine, brimstone and short-cloaked moth. The fruit will feed garden birds such as the blackbird and thrush, together with small mammals.
Other features:
The shiny dark red bark is very attractive and is used in furniture making.
